Two Surabaya Schools Renovated by CMA CGM Foundation and Happy Hearts Indonesia, Positively Impacting 780 Children

Education is the foundation of any thriving society. Yet, for many children in Indonesia, accessing quality education is hindered by inadequate school infrastructure. A groundbreaking partnership between CMA CGM Foundation and Happy Hearts Indonesia (HHI) is addressing this challenge head-on. Through their renovation efforts in Surabaya, two schools are being transformed, looking to benefit 780 students and their surrounding communities.

Indonesia faces significant challenges in its education sector. Despite having over 400,000 schools catering to approximately 52 million students (Statista), infrastructure issues persist.
In 2020, 24% of classrooms across primary and secondary schools were classified as being in poor condition, with many requiring urgent repairs. Beyond physical structures, sanitation also remains a major concern – only 68% of schools had access to clean, functional toilets as of 2021. These deficiencies are particularly pronounced in rural areas, where resources are even scarcer. (OECD Education GPS Report)
One such school, SMP Tri Guna Bhakti in Surabaya, vividly illustrates these challenges. A tornado in 2020 left classrooms and the library severely damaged, with leaking roofs, broken furniture, and unsafe floors. Students were forced to learn in unsafe and uninspiring conditions, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.

Transforming SMP Tri Guna Bhakti

The renovation of SMP Tri Guna Bhakti was a comprehensive effort to address these issues. Key upgrades included:

Looking Ahead: Scaling the Impact

The renovation of SMP Tri Guna Bhakti is just the beginning. A second school in Surabaya is set to be renovated in 2025, extending the benefits to 780 students in total. Moreover, long-term support includes:
As Indonesia continues to bridge its education gap, initiatives like this one offer a model for change – one that prioritizes not only immediate needs but also long-term sustainability. With continued efforts, every child in Indonesia can look forward to learning in safe, inspiring, and equitable spaces.
