Bali Climate Week 2025: Local Leadership Holds the Key to Advancing Climate Action

Denpasar, August 25, 2025 –  A spirit of urgency and collaboration filled Denpasar this morning as Bali Climate Week 2025 officially opened.

Over the next six days, Bali will host a landmark gathering that brings together local leaders, climate advocates, academics, businesses, and communities to discuss one pressing question: how can regional leadership accelerate climate action so that Indonesia meets its national and global emission reduction targets?

Spotlight on Local Leadership

In the opening session, Dewa Made Indra, Regional Secretary of Bali, delivered remarks on behalf of Governor Wayan Koster. He underlined that Bali’s development vision, Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali, aligns with protecting nature, culture, and communities in a holistic way.

“Through Bali Climate Week 2025, climate commitments and actions at the local level, initiated by communities and local leaders in Bali, will inspire more ambitious climate action in Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faishol Nurofiq, also joined virtually, stressing the importance of regional leadership:

“Local governments can become the driving force toward a climate-resilient future. The Ministry is ready to support local policies, community innovations, and public engagement.”

Lessons and Inspiration from Other Provinces

Bali is not alone in this effort. Mahyeldi Ansharullah, Governor of West Sumatra, shared how his province prioritizes forest governance and social forestry as part of a low-carbon, climate-resilient development pathway.

"Regional leaders have a key role in implementing local climate action, as they directly experience the impacts of the climate crisis and must engage directly with local issues and contexts. Bali Climate Week will be a first step and a catalyst for inspiration for regional climate leaders, sharing insights and support to achieve regional climate ambitions that support national emission reduction targets."

Research, Financing, and the Green Economy

Beyond leadership, speakers highlighted challenges around climate financing. Suzanty Sitorus, Executive Director of ViriyaENB, emphasized the need to integrate climate action with inclusive, locally driven economic growth.
Meanwhile, Nirarta Samadhi of WRI Indonesia underlined the role of research and proven best practices that can be scaled up at provincial and municipal levels.
On August 28, the week will feature the Climate Investment Forum, connecting governments, funders, businesses, and communities to explore sustainable financing mechanisms for local climate solutions.
