Our focus is on addressing issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly on tackling waste management challenges. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bf0337 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8bf0337\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe do this through various programs and projects in collaboration with the government, industries, and other stakeholders. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23814ed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"23814ed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe have a diverse team that includes experts in engineering, economics, politics, social engineering, psychology, and more. <b>As we know, sustainability issues are complex and multifaceted &#8211; so this team helps bring a diverse perspective.<\/b>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19f99b0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19f99b0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWaste management in Indonesia often doesn&#8217;t receive the urgency it deserves, whether in urban or rural areas. People tend to assume that waste is someone else&#8217;s responsibility but theirs.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f07521a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f07521a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tHowever, those living near landfills directly experience the consequences. Although it might sound clich\u00e9, this is a significant concern. Recently, there have been several incidents, such as landfill fires, one of which occurred in Bali this year. I was actually in Bali at the time, and the situation was severe, with thick smoke making it difficult to drive and creating hazardous breathing conditions.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fcabdfd e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"fcabdfd\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f406a8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0f406a8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>In the context of Indonesia, how would you describe the current state of waste management, and what challenges do you observe in this area?<\/b><\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-257aeb2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"257aeb2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThese incidents have prompted several ministries to take more active steps toward waste management. While there are several organizations focused on this issue, achieving a holistic approach that brings together all the necessary stakeholders remains a major challenge, particularly for our government.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e47d298 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e47d298\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe are on the right track to tackling this issue &#8211; we&#8217;re working on creating a sustainable waste management system focused on reducing, reusing, and recycling. There are also several regulations currently being refined, and CSWM has been at the forefront to contribute to this process.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1d1e746 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1d1e746\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>While the government plays a significant role in shaping policies, who else should be involved in shaping our waste management system?<\/b><\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bb50115 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bb50115\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTo answer that question, it&#8217;s important to first understand the goal we&#8217;re aiming to achieve with waste management. Currently, the typical process involves consumers purchasing products, using them, and then discarding them as waste. The idea is to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills by treating it through various processes by the recycling industries.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b4764b2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b4764b2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThese recyclers then process the waste, which is sold back to producers. The producers create new products from these recycled materials, which are then purchased by consumers, completing the cycle.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d1dc29e elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"d1dc29e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<b>For this system to work, producers need to understand that their products should contain recycled content or be designed in a way that makes them easier for waste pickers to collect and for the recycling industries to process.<\/b>\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-76ed49a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"76ed49a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t As consumers, we also play a crucial role. From a psychological aspect, it&#8217;s vital that people start to understand sorting their waste, despite any pessimism about whether it will be mixed later. Even a simple act like separating organic from inorganic waste can make a significant difference.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-667b4ca elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"667b4ca\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tFor instance, plastic mixed with organic material becomes stained and harder to clean, which lowers its value, especially for waste pickers, or &#8220;pemulung.&#8221; That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s important for consumers to sort their waste, as this can help create a more humane system for waste pickers. <b>In Indonesia, waste picking is largely informal, so there&#8217;s also a need to formalize this system.<\/b>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0853635 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0853635\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><a href=\"https:\/\/berdayahub.com\/id\/why-our-waste-management-education-has-been-unsuccessful\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>You might also like our interview with Merah Putih Hijau (MPH): Why Our Waste Management Education Has Been Unsuccessful<br \/><\/i><\/a><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-44c64cb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"44c64cb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe collected valuable waste can then be sold to recycling industries, which vary from community-based initiatives to startups and large-scale operations. However, there are still challenges in optimizing these processes. All stakeholders need to understand their roles and collaborate effectively for a circular economy to truly take shape.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed43bcb elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ed43bcb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>How do you actively work to connect and collaborate with various stakeholders?<\/b><\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b91da4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b91da4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe actively participate in several associations and forums, such as ADUPI, ASOBSI, and IPR, among others. <b>Being a part of these associations allows us to hear the different perspectives within the industry.<\/b> For example, plastic producers might express concerns about the impact on their business, while recyclers, like those in ADUPI members, might face challenges due to unclear regulations.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-eb12c6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"eb12c6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe also maintain strong connections with several ministries, particularly the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, as well as those responsible for commerce, finance, and maritime affairs. Through our projects and interactions with these stakeholders, we&#8217;ve built a network. <b>Our goal at CSWM is to serve as a neutral partner, acting as a bridge to connect all stakeholders involved in waste management.<\/b>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-727e8e0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"727e8e0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\"><b>How do you think it's possible to align these individuals or groups towards a common goal despite their differing missions and incentives?<\/b><\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d44c20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d44c20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt&#8217;s definitely a tricky challenge because, in the end, it all comes down to economics and incentives. Each party, including the government, needs to see a benefit, and the government can&#8217;t allocate unlimited funds to tackle these issues since there are other priorities. <b>So, aligning perspectives always involves considering the economic impact.<\/b>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2d68fd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2d68fd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTo address this, we hold numerous Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with stakeholders, including producers from various industries like plastics, textiles, and e-waste. This year and next, we&#8217;ll continue working closely with the government, gathering input from various associations, industries, and communities to help refine the regulation. Hopefully, by next year, we&#8217;ll see significant progress in the EPR regulations. The challenge lies in determining how to do this systematically and ensure it benefits ever parties involved.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7e3ede4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7e3ede4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tTo enable a holistic and fair view and judgement, a separate organization needs to be established to facilitate EPR. This organization is referred to in the literature as a <b>Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO).<\/b>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-63a8953 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"63a8953\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCurrently, a PRO has yet to be established in Indonesia, but we are proposing an initiative to create one under the gaze of the Indonesian government. This organization would operate independently, allowing the relevant ministries to focus on other matters while the PRO handles the EPR implementation.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dca16d6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dca16d6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe PRO would have two main functions: operational and financial. Producers are incentivized to think about the end-of-life stage, and recyclers and sorters are supported by a system funded by the producers.
